You know the term “mad as a hatter?” It’s because the people who made hats for a living ingested lots of mercury, a commonly used medium for razzle dazzle finish, and they went a little cray cray.
And then, someone thought of using mercury for making sparkly (less expensive than silver) table ware. That wasn’t a good idea, either.
